Solving the Honey Bee Crisis With Innovative Nontoxic Solutions

The global honey bee population has been under atttack for years, with hive numbers dwindling due to pesticides, chemicals, shrinking habitat, invasive bee and hornet species, and massive infestations by beetles and mites.  To address these crises, Gordon Clauss, founder of Bee Box Solutions, has invented and brought to market innovative non-toxic products to address 3 key threats to the cultivation of honey bees worldwide.

3 Critical Problems Affecting Bee Hive Health in the US and Around the World

Small Hive Beetle Infestations
Small Hive Beetles are an industry crisis, impacting beekeepers in 30 US states as well as around the world.

The  beetle invades and deposts larvae inside honey bee colonies, which then overrun the colony, causing damage to comb, stored honey, and pollen.

In many cases, the hive is so comprismised that it collapes from within, destroying the entire colony, and sending the surviving bees to swarm to a new location.

Drastic measures are taken to erradicate or reduce the infestation rate.  In Italy, for example, the government mandades that any beekeeper with documented infestations of the beetles in a single hive must burn and destroy all bee hives in the area, killing millions of bees, and destroy ing the livelyhood of the beekeeper.

Fortunately, there now is a simple, inexpensive and efffective solution to stop the Small Hive Beetle even after infestation, and to stop its spread to other hives.

Verroa Mite Infestations

The Verroa Mite is a pest which attacks the bees both in the larvae stage, and after emerging as an adult.

Immediately after the queen lays each egg, an adult Verroa mite often hops into the cell just before the queen can capp it with wax.

As the bee develops, the mite lays its own eggs in the protected cell, and the baby mites multiply quickly, overrunning the developing larvae.

The mites feed both on the larvae in the cell, and the bees upon release, creating lesions in the skin of the bee, resulting in infection and often death.

Some mites remain in the open cell, waiting for a new egg to be deposited, starting the cycle all over again.

When the hive is infested, the bees react, and often up to 60% of bees swarm away to try to establish a new non-infected colony during the spring swarming season.

Thanks to the Clauss Verroa Collector, there is now a new holistic way to interrupt the breeding cycle of the Verroa mites, which can cleanse the colony of all mites in just a 63-day period, without chemicals or pesticides.

Poor Hive Environmental Health

Beekeepers around the world have been using the wooden bee box with insertable wooden frames (?) for more than 100 years, with few innovations to improve the well being of the bees and their colony.

The rectangular shape of the box, with a flat wooden  top, often result in temperature variations within the hive, with cold weather dramatically slowing down the production of honey and the survival of the bees.

In addition, the flat top causes humidity to drip down into the hive randomly, allowing for wood rotting, and funguses and bacteria to fluourish in the moist stagnant environment.

And the solid wooden lid requises smoking the bees, and then extraction of the frames to inspect the colony to see what is going on inside.

Without invasive physical inspection, the hive can be infested by beetles, mites, and other organisms without the beekeeper ever knowing the plight they are in.

Thanks to the Clauss Hive Done, there is a new system that allows bee keepers to visual access the hive at any time, and which controls and stabilizes both the hive temperature and humidity, resulting in a happier, healthier, less stressed, and more productive colony.

3 Holistic Non-invasive and Chemical-free Solutions!

The Better Beetle Blaster

The Beetle Blaster attrracts and traps and kills the beetles within the hive, wihtout using any kind of chemicals or pesticides.

The solution is simple yet elegant - as well as easy-to-use and inexpense for the bee keeper.

A couple of long thin narrow plastic V-shaped trays are insterted between the frames at the top of the hive, and are filled with edible vegetable oil.

The mites are instantly attracted to the pentiful food source, and fall or climb through the slats in the top of the trap into the standing oil, where rhey drown.

Each month, the bee keeper simply opens the top of the hive, removes the beetle-filled trays, and replaces them with new clean trays, and fills them with a small amount of vegetable oil to start the cycle again.

Scientists use the trap to monitor and measure the spread of the beetles, by trapping and surveying the number of mites collected each month.  This is the easiest, simplist, and most reliable method to document and stop the spead of mites to new fields and hives.

The Clauss Verroa Collector

The Clauss Verroa Collector uses the breeding patterns of  Verroa Mites to trap and kills kill them, thus preventing the mites from  laying eggs in the cells.

Gary - describe how the trap works here

When a hive is infested with Verroa Mites, the bee keeper inserts the trap into XXXX,

This process last 21 days for each cycle, with large numbers of the mites trapped and killed each cycle.

At the end of 3 sequential  21-day cyscles - running  as little as 63 days in total - all the mites are eliminated from the hive.

If a hive is reinfested, the bee keeper simply repeats the 3 cycle-process to restore total hive health free from the mite infestation.

The elimination of the mites result in less stressed bees, and elimiante the yearly Verroa swarm where bees abandon the infested hive to establish a new healthy colony in another location.

The Clauss Hive Dome

The Clauss Hive Dome is the most exciting innovation in physical bee hive structure since the invention of wooden slats more then XX years ago.

The bee keeper simply opens the cap of the hive, and places a transparent plastic  (what kind -Polyethylene?) dome on the top of the underlying frame, and then replaces the flat lid on top.

The dome channels the air flow and air circulation pattens in the hive, and stabilies the temperature, while  reducing condensation and humidity.

This results in a more efficient temperature-controlled hive, with less stress on the bees, resulting in a higher survival rate of the colony, and increased hive health and honey production.

It increases the self sufficiency of the hive, by the beed not having to expend their energy in hive stabilization.

It also allows bee keepers to visually inspect the hive without having to open the hive and disturb the bees.

By mitigating the stress on the bees and the hive, it is demonstrated to produce 5 1/2 more kilos of honey per season per hive, dramatically increasing the profitability for the bee keeper.
